red fox kit
The fox population seems to be very low this year. I had my first sighting of one this year on my way home last week running along the guardrail of a bridge I cross each day.

A couple of years back, a vixen raised her five kits under that same bridge, allowing me to get a nice series of photos of them as they grew. I’d like to think that the one I saw last week was a survivor of that sweet little family.

The attached photo is that of a kit I raised and released to the wild back in the mid 80’s. I was fortunate enough to be able to follow her development for over a year as she adapted to the wild. Foxes are more cat like than dog like in their behavior, and she was a thrill to watch. Her story can be read in ‘Pond Memories, more tales from a wildlife rehabilitator.’
